Scholarships for Karnataka Students: State & Central Schemes

Fees are the reason a large number of Karnataka students take a seat below the one they earned. A good deal of that is avoidable, because both the state and central governments run schemes that most eligible students never apply to — usually because nobody told them the scheme existed, or the deadline passed while they were still in counselling.

Below are the schemes we track, what each is actually for, and who runs it. Amounts and deadlines change by cycle, so treat this as a map and confirm the current terms on the official portal before you apply.

Karnataka state schemes

Post Matric Scholarship for SC/ST Students — run by the Social Welfare Department, Government of Karnataka. Provides full or partial fee reimbursement plus a maintenance allowance. Open across levels rather than to a single year of study.

Vidyasiri Scholarship — run by the Backward Classes Welfare Department. A food and accommodation allowance, which makes it one of the more useful schemes for students who have to move city to take up a seat. Hostel costs are the expense most often left out of a family's calculation.

Post Matric Scholarship for Minority Students — run by the Minority Welfare Department, Government of Karnataka. Fee reimbursement and maintenance allowance.

Karnataka Arivu Education Loan Scheme — run by the Karnataka Minorities Development Corporation. A concessional education loan rather than a grant, which puts it in a different category from the rest of this list: it has to be repaid, but on better terms than a commercial loan.

Central government and AICTE schemes

Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students — Ministry of Education. An annual scholarship for undergraduate and postgraduate study.

AICTE Pragati Scholarship for Girls — All India Council for Technical Education. Tuition fee reimbursement and an incidentals allowance, for girls in technical education.

AICTE Saksham Scholarship for Differently Abled Students — AICTE. Tuition fee reimbursement and incidentals allowance.

National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship — Ministry of Education. Aimed earlier in the pipeline: Class 8 students in government, local body or aided schools who clear the NMMS selection test and meet the income limit, supporting them through Classes 9 to 12.

The three mistakes that cost students money

Assuming one application covers everything. State and central schemes run on separate portals with separate timelines. The National Scholarship Portal handles most central schemes; the Karnataka schemes run through the state's own systems. Applying to one does not register you for the other.

Applying after counselling. Several schemes need your admission details, but their windows do not politely wait for you. Find out the dates for the schemes you qualify for before counselling starts, so that the paperwork is a scheduled task rather than a scramble.

Not having the documents ready. Income certificate, caste certificate where applicable, bank account in the student's own name, and previous marks cards are the recurring requirements. The certificates are the slow ones — they involve a separate government process with its own queue, and they are the usual reason an otherwise eligible application misses a deadline.

What we are not telling you

We are deliberately not quoting scholarship amounts or deadlines as figures on this page. Both change every cycle, and a stale number here would be worse than no number — it would give you a reason not to check.

If fees are the binding constraint

Two other things are worth knowing. Government and aided colleges admitting through KEA counselling charge substantially less than private colleges admitting through management quota for the same course — the difference is often several times over, and it is visible in the fee column on our college pages where an official figure exists.
