Measured from 24,791 verified KCET 2025 closing ranks, transcribed by hand from the Karnataka Examinations Authority's own allotment notifications.
In short
91.2% of KCET 2025 closing ranks loosened between Round 1 and Round 2. Across 6,967 college–branch–category combinations matched in both rounds, only 615 moved the other way. For General Merit Computer Science the average seat opened by 22,033 ranks. Waiting for Round 2 is not a gamble in most branches — it is the norm, and this is the measurement rather than the received wisdom.
Why this cannot be found elsewhere
Round-to-round movement cannot be modelled from a trend — it needs both rounds’ notifications read side by side. Most sites in this category publish expected cut-offs derived from previous years. Every figure on this page is measured from 52,807 verified rows covering 975 colleges and 155 branches, each carrying the publication it was read from.
Finding 1 — how far the door opens in Round 2
General Merit only, matched on the same college, branch and category in both rounds. A positive figure means the closing rank got looser — a worse rank was enough by Round 2.

Finding 2 — what a reservation category is worth, in ranks
The same college, the same branch, the same round — the difference between the General Merit closing rank and the category’s. This is the number families ask about constantly and almost nobody publishes, because it requires every category’s rows rather than the headline one.

An average across every college that published both figures. It is not a promise about any one seat — a category rank is still a rank, and the spread inside a branch is enormous, which is the next finding.
Finding 3 — there is a seat at almost every rank
In Computer Science alone, General Merit closing ranks in 2025 ran from 234 to 2,61,973 across 158 colleges. The branch a student wants is almost never the constraint; the college is. A rank that reaches no CSE seat at one college reaches one somewhere in the same list — which is the practical use of a transcribed closing-rank table and the reason estimates are not a substitute for one.
