BCA vs B.Sc Computer Science: Which to Choose in Karnataka?

A practical comparison of the two most common undergraduate computing degrees available across Karnataka colleges.
Both are three-year undergraduate computing degrees, both lead into software work, and most comparisons between them stop at "BCA is practical, B.Sc is theoretical". That is true and nearly useless for deciding. The place the two degrees genuinely diverge is what happens after them — and on that there is an official rule, not an opinion.
The difference that is actually written down
Karnataka's MCA admissions run through KEA's PGCET, and its 2026 Information Bulletin sets out who is eligible. The two degrees do not arrive on equal terms:
- A BCA graduate — or a Computer Science Engineering graduate — is directly eligible.
- A B.Sc graduate is eligible only with Mathematics at 10+2 or at degree level, and then with additional bridge courses as the concerned university prescribes.
So if an MCA is a realistic part of your plan, BCA is the cleaner path and B.Sc carries a conditional one. If you take B.Sc Computer Science without Mathematics at either level, the standard Karnataka route into MCA is closed to you at the eligibility stage — before marks are considered at all. That is worth knowing at seventeen rather than at twenty.
There is also no part-time MCA offered in the state, so this is not a decision you can defer and fix later while working.
What each degree emphasises
BCA is application-oriented: programming, databases, web development and software project work, built around producing working software.
B.Sc Computer Science leans on fundamentals — algorithms, discrete structures, theory of computation — with more mathematics carried through the degree.
Neither is a weaker degree. They optimise for different next steps, which is exactly why the postgraduate rule above should drive the choice more than the syllabus comparison does.

On employability, be sceptical of strong claims
For entry-level software roles, employers hiring in Bengaluru generally weigh demonstrated ability — code you have written, internships, projects you can talk through — well above which of these two degrees is on the certificate. That is the honest summary, and this site has no verified placement data broken down by BCA against B.Sc to put behind it. Anyone quoting you a package difference between the two degrees is estimating.

What this directory actually covers
Being straight about coverage rather than implying a state-wide finding: this directory records BCA at 16 Karnataka colleges and a dedicated B.Sc Computer Science listing at 1, with a general B.Sc at 23. That gap reflects how programmes are recorded here — many colleges offering computer science do so under a general B.Sc entry — and should not be read as a count of what Karnataka offers.

How to choose
- Is an MCA plausible? If yes, BCA is directly eligible and B.Sc is conditional. If you choose B.Sc anyway, make sure Mathematics is on your record at 10+2 or degree level.
- Is an M.Sc or research plausible? B.Sc is the degree that connects to IIT JAM and to academic progression.
- Genuinely undecided? Choose on the teaching you will actually receive — curriculum, labs, project work, and where that specific college's recent graduates went. That varies far more between two colleges offering the same degree than between the two degrees.
