An autonomous college is still affiliated to a parent university — for example VTU or Bengaluru City University — but sets its own curriculum, conducts its own examinations and handles internal assessment. Your degree is awarded by the parent university.
A deemed-to-be university has university status in its own right under the UGC Act. It designs its own programmes and awards its own degrees, and often runs its own entrance test and admission process.
For you as a student, the practical differences are who awards the degree, how admissions work, and usually fee levels. Both are legitimate provided the institution holds current UGC recognition and, for technical courses, AICTE approval — worth verifying directly on the UGC and AICTE websites.
