Diploma to Degree: Lateral Entry Through Karnataka DCET

A diploma holder can enter the second year of a B.E directly, and Karnataka runs a dedicated entrance test for it. Two things about DCET are widely reported wrongly, and both change how you should prepare. Everything below comes from KEA's official DCET-2026 Information Bulletin-1, published 17 March 2026.

What DCET is for

KEA conducts the Diploma Common Entrance Test under Government Order No. ED. 59 TEC 2012 for admission to the 2nd Year / 3rd Semester of engineering courses under the Lateral Entry Scheme. You join an existing cohort one year in, rather than starting over.

Correction one: the paper is not branch-specific

The common assumption — and what most guides say — is that DCET tests your diploma branch. It does not. KEA's timetable heads the syllabus "Common to all Engineering Diploma Programmes", and it is a single paper covering five subjects:

• Engineering Mathematics
• Statistics and Analytics
• IT Skills
• Fundamentals of Electrical and Electronics engineering
• Project Management Skills

A civil diploma holder and a computer-science diploma holder sit the same paper. Preparing only your own branch's technical subjects is preparing for the wrong exam. The syllabus was revised per Department of Collegiate and Technical Education letters dated 19 May 2023 and 28 January 2026, so work from the current one rather than an older PDF.

Correction two: you are not restricted to your diploma branch

Government Order No. ED 88 DTE Bangalore dated 14 July 2022 ordered that eligible diploma holders may select any engineering branch for lateral-entry admission to the 2nd Year / 3rd Semester. Branch mapping from diploma to degree is not a constraint on your option list. A mechanical diploma holder may enter Computer Science on rank.

The paper

Books, tables, mechanical charts, programmable electronic aids and cell phones are barred from the hall, and possession alone is treated as malpractice.

Candidates claiming government seats under the Horanadu and Gadinadu Kannadiga clauses, whose mother tongue is Kannada, Tulu or Kodava, sit an additional Kannada Language Test at 4th-standard level — with the examination centre in Bangalore only.

Eligibility: the final-year figure, not the whole diploma

This is the detail candidates most often get wrong. The requirement is an aggregate of 45% taken together in all the subjects of the final year — the fifth and sixth semesters — of the diploma examination, not across all three years. For SC, ST and Backward Classes of Karnataka candidates the figure is 40%.

A weak first year does not disqualify you. A weak final year does.

The working-professional route

There is a separate DCET stream for working professionals, with substantially tighter conditions. Beyond the same marks requirement, the bulletin requires full-time work experience after the diploma — two years, reduced to one year per an AICTE circular dated 24 August 2023 — as on 1 September 2026, in the branch of engineering in which the candidate holds the diploma and seeks admission. Note that the any-branch freedom above does not extend here.

Employment must also be within 15 km of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike limits, or the relevant City Corporation limits elsewhere — widened to 75 km from residence or workplace to the enrolled institution by AICTE circular dated 21 March 2024. Apprenticeship sponsored by the Board of Apprenticeship Training, Southern Region counts as professional experience.

After the test

KEA runs document verification, then option entry, then round-wise allotment into the lateral-entry seats available at participating colleges. In the 2026 cycle document verification ran 7 to 18 July, the first round option-entry link opened on 27 July, and the seat allotment result was announced on 6 August. The working-professional seat matrix followed on 10 August.
