No KCET Seat After Round 3? Your Legal Options in 2026

If you have no engineering seat after KCET 2026 Round 3, there is no fourth KEA round to wait for: KEA closed online allotment on 8 September 2026 and returned the 24,283 engineering and 252 architecture seats still unallotted to the colleges themselves. COMEDK's engineering counselling has also ended. That leaves four legitimate routes — a returned seat applied for at the college directly, a management seat at a published fee, a diploma now with lateral entry later, or KCET 2027 — and one thing to refuse: anyone selling a "guaranteed" seat.

What KEA did on 8 September

KEA's announcement No. ED/KEA/ADALITHA/C.R.04(BHA)/2026, dated 8 September 2026, says the first, second and third rounds of online seat allotment for government-quota engineering seats were concluded on 7 September, and that the seats still unallotted after the final round — 24,283 engineering and 252 architecture — are returned to the respective colleges under the consensual agreement with the private-college associations (KUPECA, KRLMPCA, AMPCK) and AICTE's last date for admissions. KEA published the college-wise list of those seats on its UGCET 2026 portal the same day, in two files — engineering and architecture. A candidate without an allotment now deals with the college directly. No casual-vacancy or mop-up round has been notified, and our counselling tracker shows the whole KCET track with no dated step left.

Route 1 — a returned seat, applied for at the college

1. Open KEA's college-wise list of returned seats and note the colleges and branches that still have seats.
2. Contact those colleges directly, in writing where you can. Ask three things: is the seat available, what is the fee for this academic year, and is it the seat returned by KEA or a management seat.
3. Get the fee in writing before you pay anything, and pay only the college, against a receipt in the college's name.

KEA's notice does not say what fee a college may charge for a returned seat, and this page will not guess it — that is exactly why you ask for it in writing.

Route 2 — a management-quota seat at a published fee

Private colleges fill part of their intake outside counselling, at a fee each college declares. It is a legal route with a real price, set by the college rather than by KEA. Route 3 — a diploma now, a degree through DCET later

A three-year engineering diploma leads to lateral entry into the second year of B.E/B.Tech through KEA's Diploma CET (DCET). It takes longer than a four-year degree — three years of diploma, then three of B.E/B.Tech — but it keeps you studying engineering from this year instead of waiting a year for the next KCET. Route 4 — KCET 2027

KEA has not announced KCET 2027 yet — no notification, no dates. For scale, the 2026 cycle's results came out on 6 June 2026 and counselling ran until September. What to refuse: "guaranteed seats" and capitation fees

Karnataka prohibits capitation fees by law — the Karnataka Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Capitation Fee) Act, 1984. Nobody outside KEA's allotment and the college's own admission office can give you a seat, and no agent can "move" a rank. The warning signs are consistent: payment in cash or to a personal account, no receipt in the college's name, a fee that is not written down, or pressure to decide within the hour. If you meet them, walk away — and tell the college you were approached in its name.

If you did get a seat and are thinking of giving it up

KEA's rule after the Round-3 final result was strict: no further choice, compulsory admission, and — under CET-2006 rule 10(4) — cancelling an engineering seat after the third round means paying the government fee plus a penalty of five times that fee to KEA. Questions students are asking

Will there be a KCET Round 4 in 2026? No. KEA concluded online allotment on 7 September and returned the unallotted seats to the colleges on 8 September. Any further round would be a fresh KEA notification, and none has been issued.

Can I still get a seat through COMEDK? COMEDK's engineering counselling has ended — its last dated step was Round-4 reporting on 11 September, and there is no Round 5. Check comedk.org for anything new.

Are the returned seats cheaper than management seats? KEA's notice does not say what a college may charge for them. Ask the college in writing and compare it with the fee the college publishes for its management seats.

Is it worth taking a less-preferred branch now instead of waiting a year? It depends on the branch, the college and you — but it is a decision to make with real closing ranks in front of you, not with an agent. A counsellor can walk through your options with you for free.
