Cancelling a KEA seat — what it actually costs
₹5,000, the whole fee, or the whole fee plus five times it. Which one depends on when you surrender and whether the seat is engineering.

What “five times the fee” means in rupees
The penalty is a multiple of the fee, so the amount depends on your college. Against KEA’s own published 2026-27 annual General-Merit fees, the scale looks like this. Use your own paid fee for your actual figure — this table is the published fee, not a quote.

Fees: KEA Provisional Fees Structure UGCET — Engineering / Architecture Courses 2026-27 (dated 10-07-2026). The penalty column is that fee × 5, per §19 clause V — it is the arithmetic of KEA’s own rule, and the entire fee paid is forfeited on top of it.
Rules that apply whatever your situation
- Payment of the penalty is mandatory — rule 12(2) allows no exemption to any category of candidate. (Clause IV)
- You can surrender a seat only to KEA, never to the college. Leaving the college without surrendering to KEA does not release the seat, and KEA calls that a breach of contract. (Clauses VII and item 13(xiii))
- No surrender or cancellation is accepted unless you hand back the ORIGINAL admission order issued by KEA, the original bank challan and the original verification slip. (Clause VIII)
- A cancellation request submitted after the period specified for that round is not entertained, and KEA states legal action may follow a late request. The window is per round and it is notified — watch it. (§19, "Cancellation of seat")

- How much do I lose if I cancel a KCET seat?
- It depends entirely on WHEN you surrender and whether the seat is engineering. Surrender before the last date for 3rd-round option entry and KEA deducts ₹5,000 as a processing fee and refunds the rest. Surrender an engineering seat after the Casual Vacancy Round — or simply never join it — and the entire fee is forfeited AND you are liable for a penalty of five times the fee.
- Is the five-times penalty real, and can it be waived?
- Yes, it is in the bulletin: for engineering seats surrendered after the Casual Vacancy Round, or not joined at all, the Executive Director forfeits the entire fee and the candidate is liable to pay a penalty of five times the fee. Rule 12(2) makes payment of the penalty mandatory with no exemption for any category of candidate.
- Can I just not join the college instead of cancelling?
- No — that is the most expensive option. KEA treats not surrendering and not joining exactly like a late surrender: for engineering, the entire fee is forfeited plus the five-times penalty. Silence is not an exit.
- Can I surrender the seat to the college?
- No. A seat can be surrendered only to KEA. Leaving the college without surrendering to KEA does not release the seat — the bulletin calls that a breach of contract and a lack of social responsibility.
- What do I have to hand back to cancel?
